In Small, twelve-year-old Noortje experiences her first massage, given by a large and muscular man. Noortje feels insecure because of her awakening sexuality; she is not quite ready to have her skin touched by strange hands, and certainly not by large masculine hands. The situation is also a little uncomfortable for the masseur, as he can tell that it is almost too much for her, but eventually the girl relaxes and they experience a moment of intimacy. After the massage Noortje feels a little bit more like a woman on the inside, but outwardly nothing has changed.
